A gunman opened fire inside a building where more than 250 kids and staff were starting a day of summer camp on Monday, setting off a panic that ended with a gunfight with police in Duncanville, Texas.

Officers shot the attacker, who was later declared dead at a local hospital. Authorities are crediting the fast response by camp staff and police with preventing injuries to anyone else.

The incident started at 8:43 a.m. local time, when police received calls of an armed man and shots fired at the Duncanville Fieldhouse, a massive sports complex that regularly contains hundreds of campers and staff during summer camp sessions.

The first officers arrived two minutes after police were alerted to the gunman, Duncanville Assistant Police Chief Matthew Stogner said at a news conference.

They did exactly how they were trained to do, which is to go in and stop the threat," he said.

Children and parents were immediately put on alert

After shots rang out inside the Fieldhouse, some children hid and texted their parents, scared for their lives. At the time, the venue was hosting kids ranging from 4 to 14 years old.

"I was scared. Because I had just woke up ... and then somebody just came and started shooting," Chloe Bausta, a camper who was in the venue's dance studio, told local TV station KDFW.

"No children have been harmed," Duncanville Fieldhouse management said afterward. No police officers or staff were hurt, either.

The children were taken to a rec center a few blocks away, where they were reunited with their families.

The first shot sparked a lockdown

Laying out Monday's sequence of events, Stogner said it began when a man walked into the Fieldhouse's front doors holding a handgun. He spoke briefly with a staff member there, then fired a shot — which was heard by others in the building.

"Upon hearing that gunshot, [camp counselors] then did what they were trained to do," Stogner said. "They moved the kids to a safe area and began locking the doors.

The gunman walked down a hall to a classroom, but he found the door was locked. He then fired one shot into the room, Stogner said. From there, the shooter walked into a gymnasium where other kids were present. He didn't immediately open fire, and counselors worked to get the children out of the area, Stogner said.

Officers caught up with the gunman in the gymnasium and confronted him, sparking an exchange of gunfire, "to where he was put down on the ground," Stogner said.

A motive isn't yet known

Police declined to discuss a motive or to identify the gunman on Monday, citing the ongoing investigation. The case is being handled by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Now they should take is lifeless body and suspend it in the air by a crane, as high as possible. Let it decay, rot, get eaten until it starts falling piece by piece to the ground. Televise it and make it known that that's how all scum bags who involve children in their crimes will be treated from now on! Maybe it would slow this shit down.

This result is what I think of when I think Texas.
If only this were the case.

Down here in Texas, it's more about using law enforcement to generate revenue, than it is about stuff like this.

I actually moved just outside of the city because I got tired of being treated like an ATM machine. Then if you get arrested, be prepared to spend at least a full 2 days in jail so the county can reap that sweet sweet money to keep you there while they feed you dry bologna sandwiches.

Then if you have to serve real time, the state or private prison will get to make even more money off you.

Not to say that people who commit crimes should go unpunished... just pointing out that from my perspective that the counties and cities in this state seem to leverage law enforcement in a way that will generate revenue, as opposed to "protect and serve".

I support law enforcement, but I don't like how my state leverages them.

I mean, the kids were lucky too.

He brought only a handgun, fired one shot then walked to another building, apparently not at anyone. Walked. Then fired one shot into a locked room. Even when kids were cornered in the gym, he didn’t shoot immediately while kids exited.

Yeah, faster police response, but sounds like he wasn’t particularly aggressive. Even with surprise on his side, he didn’t land the first shot either.

In this instance the kids were just as lucky the shooter wasn’t competent or aggressive as there was a faster response.

I’m not a conspiracy kook, particularly since I didn’t see this covered on either Fox or CNN.

Just saying, fortunately guy didn’t try very hard. I’m willing to bet it was more a desired “suicide by cop”. Kid did that here locally, held up a gun in the Walmart parking lot, shot a few empty cars, and waited until he was killed.

no doom, no gloom. didn't fit the narrative.
Hence why I wouldn’t believe it as a conspiracy.

That said, Fox would typically capitalize on this as a police victory; Good Guys with Guns Act Fast and Courageously.

But not enough drama there for it to sell either.

We both know the guys skin color, former conviction for drugs, and illegal attainment of guns would fit a narrative that *certain* people are the problem not guns.

Hoo boy, I learned a lot of coded racist language scrolling through the toxic comment section. Unfortunately seems like a sizable chunk of Americans would be okay with using melanin as reason for criminal behavior.

Good for the staff of that camp; very well trained. Also good that this asshole was blasted dead, glad to see the police actually had a pair in this scenario and did what was needed.
Police have pairs in most situations. Love when people applaud police but still gotta passive aggressively throw some shade like an angry wife

You do remember how *I* had your back several months ago on the forum, right? When everyone here was calling you a NARC, and I was literally the lone voice asking everyone to wait to let you come here to speak for yourself? 🙄

Love when cops have a short memory on who their friends are, while also thinking they get to be free of criticism. Like a petulant child who thinks only their perspective is correct or is the only one that matters.

Uvalde was a cluster fuck. If you think it was handled wonderfully then good for you... but go pick a fight with someone else brother.

Did I defend Uvalde? No… stay on point
Read through my post history sir I’ve never said we are without sin or above criticism

I’ll make it simple for you now let’s stay on track… my comment was in regards to how you can’t even just say good job to LE something is done correctly there always has to be some passive aggressive shade

Find in my post history where I have ever defended Uvalde or said LE is without sin or above criticism

In fact if you go through my posts you’ll see i at actually a pretty open minded dude and not a petulant child.

You are highly agressive, over read into what I said, have them inability to stay on topic.

Happy 4th. Enjoy your weekend

Bro, Uvalde had just happened when this thread was started. Of course I'm going to compare it against another current event. It's not my fault that you decided to jump into a thread nearly 3 weeks later.

So if you aren't defending Uvalde, and you are so open minded... then why call me an angry house wife?

I gave the officers in Dallas, and their leadership, praise for what they did. That's not good enough for you? People aren't allowed to criticize when law enforcement fuck up? We're not allowed to compare law enforcement agencies when one does it right, and the other completely fucks it up?

Go call anyone here an angry housewife, and see what aggression gets thrown at you. Don't pretend like that my response to you came out of no where. On top of this you are still throwing jabs, implying I have no reading comprehension. GTFOH with that condescending shit.

You expect me to smile and just take that? You should have just stopped with the PM you sent me... it would have been water under the bridge.
