It seems that both sides like to pick and choose when to honor the first amendment and when to disregard it.
When do Republicans disregard the 1st Amendment?

One blatant example from the past year would be Ron DeSantis' battle against pro Palestine student groups on Florida campuses.

I'm actually not familiar with that, I'll check details.

Woah, woah. Next you’ll be trying to tell me that politicians are self-serving scumbags who care more about enriching themselves and their friends than the good of the country.

But what about Obama?

Surely he was different!

I feel like our country has already passed through the five stages of grief, for the death of self-government, and has come to a deadening form of acceptance that the great experiment is over.

Felt like we crossed the final threshold with Citizens United. Once corporate speech was legalized there really was no turning back.

So then what happens next?

I guess some would say we are already there, given the politicians we have today and the different media/algorithms that back then up.

How could this ever be popular given our extreme abundance of natural resources?
Without a doubt I would say we're pretty close if not already there.

I think a lot of the populism that is behind "authority" is people like strong leaders or "daddy" as I like to refer to it, and if they are promised that they will somehow benefit from being a "strong nation" they will go along with it until they have essentially no rights except the few allowed and we enter the modern serfdom.

We also like having a group that is "doing worse than us" so we do not feel like the bottom of the barrel, especially lower socioeconomic classes....so enter the migrant "issues". We all look at things through the lens of our own reality and to me there is an undeniable push for ultimate control of the citizenry, I will use abortion as an example, lack of population (outside the idea of population collapse) leads to lack of drones to do menial jobs for the wealthy so that's now being put to the foreground as an issue, there are obvious religious contexts included in it but ultimately they want more workers.

Totally agree. Once you grant corporations the right to political speech, and then say that they have the unlimited right to speak with dollars (to buy politicians), to believe that your lousy vote makes any difference whatsoever in how you are governed is just a pathetic self-delusion.
