Went in for upper day, which today was bench press and bent barbell rows. I expected to add at least 5 pounds to the bench, but was only able to do my last weight (which was 4 days ago). Same issue with the row. Later I realized I had only eaten about 300 calories so far out of my 1,800 planned. Typically I go later and have had closer to 800 by then.

So, I'm wondering what you guys eat before workouts? Is it carbs before and protein after? Does it matter?

It happens sometimes we all have bad days.

I usually eat an apple right before the gym, humapro/gatorade intraworkout.

My lunch is usually some sandwiches or sushi rolls about 5 hrs before gym. I also have some protein between lunch and gym, usually a protein shake and some peanuts or trail mix (not that those help performance wise, just solve my hunger cravings and help me reach macro goals)

I ve been struggling with this before and just my own observations:

in the morning - only combination of fat and protein works for me. Can't have carbs as getting pretty strong insulin sensitivity and it causes me very comfortable and sleepy feeling in the gym, so I struggle with anything above 60-70%.

In case of workout around noon and afternoon - I tend to have a second meal bit bigger, but around 2 hrs before I go (as first hour is often a food coma behind computer), combination might be with carbs, mostly some meat and potatoes, but now found good protein porridge, which I tend to have from time to time :D.

but everyone's different, however, I played with it for a while and now it works pretty fine.
Of course, sleep - if I sleep too long that day, tend to have migraines, so some 6-7 hrs work for me max.

I'm only recently (this week) getting back into the gym after a long hiatus. That being said, I did almost 9 years of fitness as a religion prior to my current state.

So here's my 2 cents.

What worked for me was having a small carb snack around an hour before the gym, like a banana or a sweet potato. This allowed me to have those carbs as a minimal energy source, and enough time for the food to move down my gullet so it didn't feel like I needed to puke immediately.

During the workout I always have a whey isolate shake and alternate sips between shake/gatorade/water. Seems to help me not over hydrate and be pissing for the following 4 hours. Sip don't chug.

Post workout is when I like to have a lean protein meal and enough fiber to help me actually take a shit the next day. If i'm not in the mood for veggies, ill wait 20 minutes after a light carb/heavy protein meal and then follow with a dose of metamucil.

Sleep is also a peculiar thing in my case. If I get less than 6 hours, I'm a zombie. If i get more than 7.5 hours, I'm groggy for most of the day and struggle waking up.

As everyone says, we're all unique and our path is our own. Trial and error are your friend. And your body will change over time too. What used to work well, may not anymore. And thats OK!

I had one yesterday!

This is why plans change, less weight, less sets, less reps. Anything to keep going and deal with a drained mind and body.

People are typically stronger later in the day from the studies i have seen. Takes the CNS time to warm up. Plus, i always lifted better after having a meal or 2. Readily available fuel seems to work better then having to try break down stored energy which seems to take longer.
