Diet is the most important part of bodybuilding and the hardest

You gained 23 pounds in 5 months. Probably at least 20 of it is fat.

You need to figure out your diet

Now you’re gonna be spinning your wheels and trying to lose weight while wanting to get stronger

You basically have to get your diet in order and shes those 20 pounds. It’ll take you another 5 months to do it. Then focus on a Lean bulk.

his immediate goals are strength related.

he is under the impression he can eat more and break through the plateau he is experiencing.

he is not interested in eating less, it will make him lose the strength he has worked so hard to build.

Though he also said he doesn't want to keep gaining weight to push through stalls. I take this to mean he doesn't want to get fat.

What would you recommend for a guy who wants to get stronger, but looks like they put on 15-18lbs of fat in the process the first time he tried to get stronger?

You've done powerlifting before, and now are more of a bodybuilder. Figured you would be a good person to give him some advice on that.

some advice

getting stronger does not require weight gain. it requires practicing a set of movements while adding weight to the bar over time.

eat at maintenance. he doesn't have to cut to lose the weight he's put on.
keep training.
let time go by.
stay off the starting strength forum. their solution for every plateau is more food. "who cares what you look like"
stop seeking information.

he also said he doesn't want to keep gaining weight to push through stalls.
you're right he did say that.

You gotta figure out what u want . During cutting you’re gonna lose some strength . Do u wanna look good on the beach or do u wanna bench 500. U can do both but that takes years and a lot of experience. I still recommend shaving the 20 pounds of gorilla hair for a quick cut and u won’t lose and strength

Gaining strength while staying at the same body weight will make for slow gains at best over time once the initial bigger gains happen from just starting to lift. I used to carry 1.25 pound plates with me in my gym bag to facilitate making gains the best i could.

In my limited experience , there are very few people that can cut weight and maintain strength.

It takes an enormous amount of work, self hatred and dedication.

After reading through your posts , I will tell you this.

You are not one of those people.

You’ll probably look and have the same strength as where you were previously, which is why I said you’re spinning your wheels.

If you were more experience and already were strong, it would be harder to gain/maintain strength while cutting, but you’re still a newbie, which makes it easier to gain strength. So it is possible to not lose any strength and even maybe gain some

Take it as a learning experience and get into good eating habits. The smaller your waist, the bigger the rest of your body looks

I was stuck at that weight for 1.5 months
OMG, a whole 6 weeks. Do you expect to hit a PR every time you train or every week? That's not how it works

As a novice lifter, yes i expect to gain at least once every week.
Then you are an idiot... You won't progress every week. It's normal to stall and have to work to break through plateaus.

Post a detailed breakdown of your daily diet with all weights & measures included.

Ditto your training.

Also, how's your sleep? Stress levels?
@HairyLifter also, people have asked you for information to try to help you and you keep ignoring it. This is just one example where something was asked of you and you ignore it.

How do you expect to get help by ignoring people. There's no easy answer, and we need to understand what you're doing.

Lazy posts get lazy answers.
