For those of us who train at commercial gyms, we dread it every year: the New Year's rush. The hoards of people who come in all gung ho about working out, only to disappear by springtime. Sure, a few will stick around. But most will not, retreating to the nearest buffets until the next New Year rolls around. For dedicated gymgoers, there is no better time of year than November and December, when we pretty much have these facilities to themselves.
The New Year's crowds have been a thing for a long time, but it seems to have really ramped up in the age of social media. Lots of people want to post their "New Year, New Me" stories on Instagram.
How do you guys navigate this? Most of the time I go in the gym, anything involving free weights is occupied and sometimes with people standing around waiting. This forces me to rely more on machines than usual.
Do you view the winter period as a time to decompress and do lighter workouts? Or maybe make this the perfect time for a break in general? Or do you find different times than usual to train?
