I've read a little bit about finasteride and the effects it can have that can linger on even after stopping use.
I have never taken finasteride, but this is for my dad, who used to take it for BPH i believe. He quit taking it 2 or 3 years ago after roughly 5 or so years on, not exactly sure. It just seems like he isnt the same as he used to be. He is 60 now. Seems to me he seems depressed/emotional and very in his head all the time now. I dont think its 100% just hormonal, some of it is life stuff too, but he doesnt eat as well as I wish he would or exercise as much as he should, but he does go to the gym at work a good amount. When he was younger he lifted alot of weights and was strong, and very driven. It seems now like he has symptoms of low test, but i know for a fact that he is having symptoms that seem like what alot of people talk about with finasteride use.

Its hard to watch and frankly, the emotional/depression thing takes a toll on me as his son being around him. The other night we were talking about fighters and the conversation got turned onto athletes and steroids and he said "what would happen if I took steroids right now" and it made me think, maybe he would feel alot better on TRT, but I'm not a doctor, and I really hesitate to even suggest it because of the potential side effects. I read that some people seem to have gotten over their Post finasteride syndrome by cycling testosterone, even at TRT doses.

Didn't you also make a post about your dad and boners from TRT? I'm starting to think these posts are not about your dad at all. 😂

It's much more likely that your dad has low testosterone than it is that he has post finasteride syndrome. While it happens, the occurrence is so low statistically that you'd be better off investigating something else being the root cause.

Really though, just have him see a doctor. I mean what are you going to do even if you get an answer here?

I wouldn't blame the finasteride. I'm right behind your dad and I can tell you, life can wear you down after 60 years.

I would get his testosterone checked with a CMP, CBC and E2. May also help to take him fishing.

lol, no that must have been someone else hahaha. Thanks for the info though, will do. Not much I can do, certainly would not have him self prescribe or something stupid like that.

Makes sense. I'll see if I can get him to do some labs. And yeah a fishing trip might help, honestly, or something. I gotta find stuff to get his mind back to being ok with being less in his head

While I don't have personal experience with finasteride or TRT, I've seen similar discussions online. Some people do report lingering effects after stopping finasteride, and low testosterone could be part of the issue.

Depending on what he has for insurance, you may want to look into Private MD Labs. I get all that out of pocket for about $70 and don't have to go to the Dr. You need help with that, hit me up

not sure if this is a thing or not but

the only guy that I was ever around on a semi daily basis &

knew him for years prior to starting to use it doctor prescribed

started acting a little peculiar after awhile on it

here's what I noticed & grant you

there is no way for me to actually narrow it down to the Finasteride

he started doing this weird thing where he'd be looking at you

like a normal person does in a conversation

then every other like 30 seconds or so

he'd get a sort of halfway surprised look on his face

and his eyes would open really wide for just a couple seconds

like an expression of some sort of realization had just been made

when the conversation wasn't about anything significant or surprising

just over and over again every 10 to 30 seconds or so

with this suddenly surprised look on his face then right back to normal

it was super creepy & asked him what's up with it

he said he hadn't noticed he was doing it

PFS is real, but even though the mainstream has acknowledged it, they don't know why it happens to some and not others.

Step 1 would be complete hormonal profile, which he'll only get if he does it himself, or goes to a TRT clinic. A mainstream doc won't do it. Then either TRT which is almost gauranteed to be needed, or DHT directly to get him back up and running.

I was on fin for almost a year, no issues, then a pharmacy chage and a different brand had me dead in the water in 2 weeks. It didn't fix itself even after 2mo. I forced it. I use topical Fin now.

Any undesirable side effects from the topical?

I know this is a really old post, but I just wanted to second this. Doctors, understandably, are overly cautious about a lot of things.

When I say “understandably”, it’s because of the pressure from the DEA and how they’ve put them “at the front lines of the opioid epidemic”. Doctors also have a lot to lose with little personal gain by experimenting with drugs and out of the box modalities.

I educate myself on the simple stuff like reading bloodwork and what to get to know my body. And I educate myself on hormones and other medications that are available to me.

And then I self subscribe and continue to watch all the markers at the same intervals that a doctor would.

If something gets out of whack, I will have an honest conversation with my doctor.
