Kind of a pointless thread, but I thought it could be a fun discussion. Was the turn of the century more similar to 25 years before it, or 25 years after it (right now)? Consider factors such as culture, entertainment, society, technology, politics, fashion, etc.
Many celebrities and music acts that were popular and famous in 2000 are still relevant today. We don't view these figures nearly as "old" as we would have with 1975 celebs in the year 2000. Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks are still big time actors. Usher performed at the Super Bowl last year. Jennifer Lopez is still considered a sex symbol, and is one of the most followed women on Instagram.
In terms of technology, 2000 had the foundations of what we use today. A majority of Americans did not have internet access or mobile phones yet, but at least those things existed.
With fashion, the styles from 2000 look a bit dated. But not comically dated the way that stuff from 1975 would have looked then.
Politically, 2000 was so different from both 1975 and 2025 that it's a real toss up.
Culture and society are where I think 2000 was probably more similar to 1975. Social norms have changed quite a bit in the past quarter century. Many things that were taboo when I was kid are openly discussed, accepted and celebrated now. The kids of today are generally exposed to a lot more challenging concepts than the kids of 25 years ago. Things that existed on the fringes of society are now mainstream.
What do you guys think?
