The formation of glucose from amino acids (gluconeogenesis) in liver and kidney is intensified during starvation and this process becomes the most important source of glucose for the brain, RBC and other tissues.

If there are no other sources available such as carbs or fat the body can burn protein for energy but it is not the preferred source from my reading.

Yup.

The body's #1 goal is to not die. We have backup ways to obtain energy when food is scarce, again so we don't die. Gluconeogenesis, ketogenesis, storing/utilizing bodyfat, etc...

This is Biochem 101 ...actually Chem 4700.

You can find all the information about glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and the electron transport chain in any BioChem textbook.
