The region is seriously doomed. All the smart or skilled guys are leaving the place from there. We already had few employees from them (Lebanese, Syro-palestinian) and they are not keen on returning there anymore.

It's sad because the Gulf Arab countries are so successful.

well yes, but you see there a totally rigid social stratification. Still feudal system (why is there an emir today with so many rights?), loads of corruption and misuse, crony capitalism in the highest scale. I mean, it's everywhere, but the scale there is incredible as they have zero opposition.

Good point, but I think the people who get the short end of the stick are the migrant workers from South Asia.

I think the biggest difference is that those countries provide their citizens with a properous life. An area where guys like Assad and his father always fell short.

I mean, it's everywhere, but the scale there is incredible as they have zero opposition.

Why should there be, if they provide for their people what they need and more?

Not everyone wants to live in a western style democracy.

That s a good point, but also, history teaches us that forming welfare grown nation results in dependence on more aggressive (but also progressive) migrants. I have spent some time in Dubai, those locals are totally useless workers, in two generations, smart Indians will take over.
But let s see, maybe they will find a new way, but their tax free zones may end one day too and only Abu Dhabi has oil.

It's the same way here. We live in a very very rural area and recently a few towns from us a Pakistani family moved in and purchased the local store in town every one stops at every morning.

At first it was the usual racist nonsense , about how brown people will ruin the store ,ruin the town ... wrath of God ,were all doomed :ROFLMAO:

Then folks saw their work ethic , realized how much cleaner the store is , how polite they are and always friendly.

That's called being thankful and gratitude. They work hard as fuck because they feel blessed to have the opportunity at a better life.

Now they are the hit of the town and everyone loves them.

Really nice folks.

The locals feel entitled to that better life and just don't put in that kind of effort.

Martial law has been declared in South Korea:

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced an "emergency martial law" on Tuesday accusing the country's opposition of ruling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state actions.

Yoon declared the step as critical for defending the country's constitutional order.

"To safeguard a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea's communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements... I hereby declare emergency martial law," Yoon said in a televised address.

From what Ive read out of the area this basically equates to our Republican party being in power but having a Democratic controlled house and senate and they are blocking every thing he is trying to do including shutting down criminal investigations into his own family ... now why does that sound familiar ?

Certain societies martial law works due to them being taught some form of subservience from birth so conforming to ideas like that is "easier" for a greater swath of the population than it would be here.

The U.S. , in my humble opinion as chief stoner and head of the dept of nothingness , think that we have too much independence and "fuck you , you aren't my real dad!" built into us that while martial law could be talked about there would be no practical way to implement it and society would quickly devolve if it was pushed into internal conflict , no point in calling it a civil war .. war is not civil.

We just have too many guns , free thinkers and middle fingers for it to work.

The new offensive in Syria is continuing at a surprisingly rapid pace:

Islamist-led rebels in Syria captured the strategically crucial city of Hama on three sides, both the militants and the Syrian government said on Thursday.

"Over the past few hours, with the intensification of confrontations between our soldiers and terrorist groups... these groups were able to breach a number of axes in the city and entered it," the army said, adding that it had withdrawn from the city to prevent urban combat and the civilian death toll associated with it.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the rebels were able to make significant advances in the last 24 hours, despite the government sending "large military convoys to Hama" and the surrounding area.

They added that the Syrian army has been joined by Russian and Iranian officers, as both countries have been longtime allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

We absolutely do not want any Islamic rebels overthrowing Syria and having chemical weapons. Sorry I support Syria on this one. The Peshmerga probably have a better chance teaming up with Assad.

I see your point here. But us supporting the Kurds and further destabilizing Syria does nothing to prevent that from happening.

Also let's not forget, it's been the secular Arab leaders (Assad, Saddam Hussein) that are the ones who actually have used these chemical weapons against innocent civilians. Not Islamist regimes.
